Web site design and development is a combination
of art (graphics, layout, visual imaging) and computer savvy
(networks, bits per second, programming). Combining work in
technology with art may not seem like a typical blend since
computer technology is basically left-brain thinking and art
is typically right-brain thinking.
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards
describes left-brain thinking as verbal, analytic, symbolic,
abstract, temporal, rational, digital, logical and linear.
Right-brain is nonverbal, synthetic, concrete, analogic,
nontemporal, nonrational, spatial, intuitive and holistic.
"Webology" is a perfect blend of left and right
brain characteristics as described in the following paragraphs.
Art
is not just painting in oils or watercolor. It's combining
shapes, color, depth and textures in order to express your
thoughts, ideas and opinions with others. Art is not necessarily
the message that you are attempting to get across, but it
adds strength and further meaning to the message.
For example, there have been many studies on the influence
of color and the interpretation of color. My web site is
comprised mostly of soft and muted colors that are borrowed
from the natural world around us or textured gray tones.
This mix of colors is similar to removing the rough edges
of a group of primary colors to create a harmonizing environment.
We
now take that same color theme and add shape and texture in
the page layout. Shapes and textures can also add meaning
to your web, and you still haven't written a word of text.
Depth, the last artistic value identified here, would be
considered either the animation or interactive side of the
web design. The actual text could also be considered part
of the depth. So there you have it, and I bet you thought
that computer technology had nothing to do with Art.
